Regional Resilience — Working Waterfronts & Service Centers

This project, funded by the Maine Coastal Program and the Island Institute, seeks to avoid infrastructure failure and increase resilience to coastal flooding and future sea level rise in the most significant working waterfronts and largest coastal service centers in Washington County.

On the heels of outreach efforts by WCCOG with the Municipal Climate Adaptation Guidance bulletins and in anticipation of the 2019 release of Grants for Stream Crossings Public Infrastructure Projects, Washington County municipalities have identified several high priority resilience projects.

This regional project seeks to realize several economies of scale by coordinating ShoreUp Maine proposals from the Island Institute with several projects across coastal Washington County that all need high-quality survey and engineering services. These include a drainage design solution for a working waterfront access (Machiasport), technical assessment of roadbed and culvert vulnerabilities (Eastport, Jonesport), culvert designs (Eastport, Milbridge), and acquisition of one-foot contour survey data using a drone to capture aerial photogrammetry/topography for Safe Harbor project (Lubec).

Applications for funding

This project is funded by a Coastal Communities grant from the Maine Coastal Program and 3 ShoreUp Maine grants from the Island Institute. The background provided by the full application to the Coastal Program (including the ShoreUp Maine applications) is useful and provided below. Note however that the RFP above seeks engineering services to complete part of the overall project. Please refer to the RFP for the specific services being requested.
