 Solid Waste Management 

The WCCOG is again seeking a Solid Waste Management Grant from the Rural Utilities Service of the USDA. The grant application narrative is available here, as well as the proposed budget and the matching funds table. We are also seeking support letters to submit with the application. Please download a support letter template here and send in PDF format to Judy East no later than December 30th, 2011. If you are putting your letter in the mail please allow for delivery prior to December 30th and thank you!

 

In 2010, WCCOG obtained a $42,385.00 Solid Waste Management Grant from the Rural Utilities Service of the USDA. Notice of the award was announced in July, 2010 and funds will start in October, 2010 and allow WCCOG staff to assist Washington County communities with a scope of work to include:

  • worked with residents, transfer station managers and municipalities to develop programs to permanently increase recycling rates in Washington County.

  • organized three collections of household hazardous waste, and two collections of universal waste resulting in the collection of 3 56-long tractor trailer loads of universal waste and the following tally of household hazardous waste:

Flammable liquids (paints, gasoline, paint thinner, etc.):    202 gallons        Approx:    1820 lbs.

Aerosols:                                                                            200 lbs.

Shreds (flammable paints that are sludge)                             200lbs.

Pesticides solids:                                                               400 lbs solids  

(lead oxide 10lbs, and Calcium arsenate 95lbs)

Pesticide Liquids                                                                  350 pounds

Non regulated liquids:                                                            800 lbs

Oil based paints:                                                                   1400 lbs

Acids                                                                                     85 pounds

Alkaline liquids                                                                       60 pounds

Photochemicals                                                                      85 pounds  

Exotic stuff:

Flammable solids (moth balls)                                                   5 pounds

Dangerous when wet sodium chunk                                           1 pound

cyanide                                                                                   2 pounds

mercury devices                                                                      10 pounds

Oxidizers                                                                                  6 pounds

Recycling Technical Assistance
WCCOG staff is working with regional transfer stations to work on solutions for storage, containment, compaction, shipping and markets for the sorted recyclable materials, and assist in securing funds for facilities to support financially sustainable recycling programs.

 

Marion Recycling Center Feasibility Study
In December 2010, WCCOG staff worked with the Board of the Marion Transfer Station to obtain a Planning Grant through the Washington County TIF Fund. The objective of the Feasibility Study is to assist the Marion Board in making a decision about whether or not to expand recycling operation at the Transfer Station.

 

As part of that work WCCOG issued a Request for Proposals (issued week of Aug 8-13; due September 10, 2011) for a qualified civil engineering firm to prepare a conceptual site plan and preliminary cost estimates for the proposed regional recycling facility on the grounds of the Marion Transfer Station in Marion Township, Maine.   The work was completed in December, 2011 by CES Inc. and can be downloaded here:
