WCCOG awarded 3rd $400,000 Brownfields grant

WCCOG awarded 3rd $400,000 Brownfields Assessment grant

The Washington County Council of Governments has been awarded our 3rd Brownfields Assessment grant - three for three - and in a national pool of applicants.

Maine and New England also did very well in the national pool. Of $67 million awarded nationwide Region 1 (New England) garnered $17.3 million with $3.1 miilion in Maine for Assessment as well as Clean-Up grants and loan funds.

Brownfields are abandoned, idled, or under used industrial and commercial facilities/sites where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination. Brownfields assessment is so valuable because it is the uncertainty associated with the real or perceived contamination on Brownfields sites that inhibits their redevelopment - uncertainty about legal liability, uncertainty about the cost of any clean-up required, and uncertainty about the health and environmental impacts of any contaminants that may be present.

The Washington County Brownfields Program is sponsoring a FREE seminar on Brownfields Property Transactions and Redevelopment on June 25 in Machias (3 RealEstate CEUs approved; 3 ACIP Certification Maintenance credits pending). Details here.
