Washington County Brownfields Assessment Program

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded a fifth Brownfields Assessment Grant to the Washington County Council of Governments (WCCOG) in 2019.

Now entering its 11th year, the Washington County Brownfields program has completed over 35 brownfield assessments for sites potentially contaminated with petroleum products and hazardous substances; 20 are redeveloped, or under expansion; several assessments are pending; and others (up to 25 already identified) are waiting for consideration.

The Service Area includes all of Washington County with concentration in four target communities (Machias, Eastport, Lubec, and Calais) and the Bold Coast Scenic Byway corridor.

More details on the Washington County Brownfields Program can be found here.

Funds from the 5th assessment grant will be used to identify and review known contaminated sites; designate up to 25 sites for assessment using pre-determined selection criteria including up to 9 sites for Phase I environmental site assessments (ESA) and up to 5 sites for Phase II ESAs; and make recommendations for mitigation, remediation, and effective re-use of the properties.

Regional Advice

We  have a very active, diverse and growing advisory committee with great regional representation.

WCCOG staff are available to provide seminars to Chambers of Commerce and other groups interested in how Brownfields Assessment can assist in property re-development.
